GREENE MARINE

This is a partial plein air drawing. The preliminary sketch and notes were taken one summer day on a scrap of paper while eating a lobster roll at Day’s Take Out in Yarmouth, Maine. After working on the composition at home, I returned to Day’s Take Out to complete the painting.

LADY SLIPPER

This limited edition print of a prismacolor drawing was inspired by a photograph by Maureen Langford—her composition and sense of colors appealed to me.

REACHING FOR THE SUN

This directional drawing utilizes predominately overlapping hatching lines almost to the point of burnishing. It began as a plein air sketch in Del Mar, California. The sketch became the basis for this drawing, completed in 2008.

ODE TO GEISEL

This drawing is a fun, relaxed play of line and ink that made me think of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat.

POPPY

A tonal value study, the title reflects what I see in the shadows behind the blossom, the outline of a man in a hat. Thus, the play on “poppy,” the flower and the affectionate title some children call their fathers.

WOODS ON MERE POINT
I appreciate trees and forests for their coolness, majesty, and vastness. When my daughter saw this watercolor, she said, “Dwarfed by nature.”

VACATION

This graphite sketch was drawn in a studio at Fort Andross, Brunswick, Maine. The position of the model suggested to me that she is lounging at the beach.

ROSSMORE FIELD

A Brunswick, Maine, locale is the subject of this landscape. The oil pastel achieves its “stained” effect by buffing the finished painting with a soft flannel cloth.
